Origination of the name
The term “white blood cell” is derived from the physical look of a blood sample after centrifugation. Those cells are discovered in the buffy coat, which is a thin and white layer of nucleated cells located between the blood plasma and red blood cells. White blood cells are also called leukocyte, which is directly associated with its description. In Greek, the root “leuk-” means “white” and the root “cyt-” means “cell.” Thus, leukocyte literally means white cells. [6]
