Insect and Bug Bite Identification

Chiggers

Chiggers are also known as harvest mites or berry bugs. They are red, tiny mites that are nearly invisible to our naked eyes. A chigger bite tends to appear as red, raised bumps or red, flat patches on the skin. In some cases, they would even become pustules or blisters. They usually bite the waist, groin, thighs, wrists, and ankles. It is commonly believed that chiggers may penetrate into the skin and suck blood. However, this does not true. Instead, a chigger bite may be itchy and uncomfortable. These symptoms may last a few weeks before subsiding. [7]

Flea

Like lice or bed bug bites, flea bites are red spots that appear in clusters or lines. They are typically small and tend to have red halos in the surrounding skin. These bugs are likely to bite around your ankles or in warm areas, such as the armpits, groin, and knees. You may feel very itchy after a bite. It can even become painful or sore, leading to a rash around the skin. Scratching too much may worsen the symptoms or even result in an infection. [8]
