Three Stages of J-Pouch Surgery
Stage 1
In stage 1 of J-pouch surgery, the rectum and colon will be removed. Your anal sphincter muscles and anus still remain in place. Firstly, your surgeon would make an ileostomy temporarily, meaning to open the abdomen so that part of your small intestine will stay outside your abdominal wall. It forms an opening through which waste may leave the body into an ostomy bag, which should be emptied frequently. You have to wear this external bag for the entire period of healing. [6]
