Diabetes and Metabolism: The Impacts to Know

Overview of Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition that happens when the levels of blood sugar, also known as blood glucose is too high. Blood sugar comes directly from the food you eat and works as the main source of energy in the body. To regulate the levels of blood sugar, the pancreas releases a hormone called insulin. In people with diabetes, the body does not use insulin properly or does not produce enough insulin. As a result, more glucose remains in the blood. Over time, it may increase the risk of many chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, or cardiovascular disease. [3]
