Benefits of Balance and Flexibility Exercises
Balance and flexibility exercises are also important for people with diabetes, especially the elderly. Reduced joint mobility is common, which may be the result of more glycation end products due to aging. Stretching helps increase range of motion and flexibility around joints. Balance training can improve gait and balance, thus reducing the risk of falls. For alternative activities that combine different types of exercises, such as tai chi or yoga, studies have shown some positive effects on improving body composition, levels of lipid, and glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. However, more research is still needed to verify some effects and suggest more recommendations on incorporating these exercises on treating diabetes. [8]
