Types of Blood Transfusions
There are basically 4 common forms of blood transfusions:
– Platelet transfusion: This type can help people with a low platelet count due to a platelet disorder or chemotherapy
– Red blood cell transfusion: This type can be done in people with blood loss, blood disorder, or anemia
– Plasma transfusion: This type can provide proteins needed for overall health. People need a plasma transfusion when they have liver failure, infections, or serious burns
– Whole blood transfusion: This type is needed when you experience a serious traumatic hemorrhage and needs platelets, white blood cells, as well as red blood cells [2]
