Anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners, are prescription drugs that help prevent blood clots. These include warfarin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, edoxaban, or apixaban. Doctors usually prescribe them to those who are at a high risk of blood clots to help them reduce the chance of getting heart attacks or strokes. However, these medications may lead to coughing up blood as a side effect. You may also experience nosebleeds or blood in the urine. These problems may persist until you stop taking anticoagulants.
