Varicose Veins – Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Causes of Varicose Veins

Damaged or weak valves are the main causes of varicose veins. In general, arteries are responsible for transporting blood from the heart to other body parts. Veins play an important role in returning blood from the rest of the body to the heart to make sure the recirculation of the blood. To do this, the legs’ veins need to work against gravity. Contractions of muscles in the lower legs can serve as pumps, while elastic walls of the veins aid in returning blood to the heart. When these parts are faulty, blood would pool or flow backwards in the vein, leading to twisting or stretching.[2]
