Type 2 Diabetes in Children

Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes in Children

Treatments for type 2 diabetes in children are similar to those in adults. Depending on certain factors, a treatment plan may combine regular physical activities, healthy eating, blood sugar monitoring, weight loss surgery, medications, and insulin. Currently, three medications are approved by the FDA for treating type 2 diabetes in children:

– Meformin can be taken orally to reduce the amount of sugar released by the liver into the blood

– Liraglutide can be injected to help the pancreas release more insulin after each meal when levels of blood sugar are high

– Insulin: When levels of blood sugar are too high, insulin may be injected to stabilize sugar in the bloodstream.

In addition, some diet changes can help improve the symptoms. These include:

– Reducing portion sizes

– Consuming less fat and high-calorie foods

– Eating at home rather than eating out

– Consuming more healthy and whole foods, especially veggies, fruits, lean protein, and healthy fat [7]
