Sore Tongue – Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

Hairy Tongue

Hairy tongue is a condition that makes your tongue become “hairy.” However, it has nothing to do with hair growth. Instead, it is caused when the filiform papillae on your tongue don’t shed as normal due to the inflammation or infection that makes it sore. Filiform papillae are typically cone-shaped projections, which are around 1 mm in length. When your tongue is affected, these parts will grow longer rather than falling off and cause a hairy tongue.
