Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome

The exact cause of restless legs syndrome is still unclear. Certain environmental and genetic factors can be attributed. It is estimated that around 40 percent of reported cases have a family history of the disease. 5 genes can be linked to the condition. They would run in the family and trigger symptoms, especially before the age of 40. A deficiency of iron can also be a risk factor. Studies have shown that people with restless legs syndrome tend to have low iron levels in their brains. The condition would be linked to a disruption in the pathway of dopamine as well. That’s why Parkinson’s disease can be a risk factor. The risk can also be high in those who consume alcohol, caffeine, or take medications for treating psychosis, depression, nausea, or allergies.[3]
