Parkinson’s Disease – Diagnosis and Treatment

Imaging Techniques

Imaging techniques are not usually used for diagnosing Parkinson’s disease. However. they can be useful in some cases.

– A MRI scan: This is one of the most common options for a neurologic checkup. It is not especially useful for Parkinson’s disease diagnosis as the brain structure might appear normal. However, the test could rule out similar conditions, such as Wilson’s disease, hydrocephalus, tumors, or stroke.

– A PET scan: This procedure could help detect Parkinson’s disease. It checks for the brain pattern when it is using glucose.

– A SPECT scan: This option involves the injection of an agent that can highlight the dopamine-producing nerve cells. In people with Parkinson’s, dopamine activity will be less visible. [3]
