To diagnose metastatic breast cancer, many lab procedures and tests need to be done, depending on the affected sites. These may include a PET scan, a CT scan, X-rays, bone scan, MRI, lung needle biopsy, bronchoscopy, or even surgery. The results would help the doctor identify the presence of cancer cells in specific areas of the body. In many cases, the disease is only diagnosed after a treatment of cancer at the earlier stages.
