Imaging Tests for Lung Abscess
The most effective option to diagnose a lung abscess is a computerized tomography or CT scan. It may help differentiate between empyema and an abscess. Other imaging tests can also be used, such as an ultrasound or a chest X-ray. Results of these methods may indicate the following changes:
– The abscess cavity would be displayed clearly when it progresses with a thick wall and an air-fluid level
– Later stages may be shown less clearly due to the development of scar tissue
– An abscess tends to occur in the upper areas of the lower lobes or the right middle lobe of either lung [8]
