Diagnosis for Linear Gingival Erythema
Linear gingival erythema usually occurs first at the anterior teeth, with following progression to the posterior dentition. Due to some similarities in clinical features, it would be challenging to differentiate this condition from severe gingivitis. Healthcare providers often misdiagnose linear gingival erythema with other forms of gingivitis, especially in people with poor control of plaque. Therefore, it is important that your dentist or doctor should be informed about your full medical history. Lesions in people with linear gingival erythema do not respond or resolve with conventional periodontal treatments, such as root planing, scaling, or plaque control. Initial biopsy might not help with diagnosis if the tissue heals after follow-up. Your doctor may use X-rays to help rule out the possible involvement of the alveolar bone. [8]
