Types of Immunotherapy
CAR T-Cell Therapy
Chimeric antigen receptor or CAR T-cell therapy is a new form of immunotherapy. It treat leukemia by using T cells in your own body. In this treatment option, doctor will take a T-cell sample from the blood through leukapheresis. After that, these cells are altered in a laboratory to generate receptors for several proteins on the cancer cells’ surface. Once modified, T-cells can be injected into the body and grow quickly to get rid of cancer cells. Tisagenlecleucel is the form of CAR T-cell therapy that can be used for treating leukemia. Currently, it is only approved for the treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Scientists are trying to find out whether it is effective for other forms, especially acute myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. [5]
