Gonorrhea – Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatments for Newborns and Pregnant Women

Pregnant women with gonorrhea should seek early treatments to prevent the transmission of bacteria to their babies. In general, treatments are similar to non-pregnant women. Whether you receive treatments or not, an antibiotic ointment is applied to the eyes of the newborns at delivery to reduce the risk of infection. If you are diagnosed or treated too late, then the doctor might prescribe additional antibiotics to clear the infection. The exact dosages and duration will depend on the possible complications of the disease as well as the weight of the babies after delivery.[9]
