Folliculitis (Barber’s Itch) – Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & More

Types of Folliculitis

Folliculitis can be divided into two main forms: deep folliculitis and superficial folliculitis.

Deep folliculitis affects the entire follicles and typically causes more severe symptoms. Common types include:

– Eosinophilic folliculitis: This form mostly occurs in people with HIV/AIDS

– Sycosis barbae: It mostly happens in men who have started to shave

– Carbuncles and furuncles: They are caused by an infection of hair follicles by staph bacteria

– Gram-negative folliculitis: It typically occurs in those who go through antibiotic treatment for acne in the long term

Superficial folliculitis only affects part of hair follicles. Main types include:

– Pseudomonas folliculitis: Pseudomonas bacteria, which can be found in heated pools or hot tubs, are the main cause of this form

– Pityrosporum folliculitis: A yeast infection is the main cause of this form.

– Bacterial folliculitis: It happens when hair follicles are infected with staph bacteria on the skin

– Razor bumps: This occurs due to ingrown hairs in men with curly hair who have shaved too close. [2]
