Diagnosis & Medications
Many conditions may cause typical symptoms of Salmonella infection, such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. Thus, a doctor cannot diagnose the condition only based on the noticed signs. They need to isolate the bacteria in the lab from your stool. Some biochemical tests can be done to identify the genus Salmonella. Based on lab results, your doctor can make a precise diagnosis and suggest proper treatment options. [8]
Diarrhea caused by salmonella infection may lead to dehydration. Thus, treatment focus on replenishing electrolytes and fluids. In more serious cases, hospitalization is required so that fluids can be directly delivered into your vein. The following medications can be prescribed for treating the infection:
– Antibiotics: These medications can be prescribed in more serious cases when the bacteria have penetrated the bloodstream or in people with a weakened immune system. Antibiotics do not really benefit in mild cases. In fact, they would even extend the period of carrying the bacteria snd increase the risk of relapse.
– Anti-diarrheals: These medications can help alleviate cramping. [9]
