Treatment Options for Epiglottitis
The first treatment for people with epiglottitis is to use a pulse oximetry tool to monitor the levels of oxygen and protect the airway. When the oxygen level in the blood is too low, a breathing mask or tube is needed to prevent life-threatening conditions. In addition, a doctor would suggest the following treatments, depending on the situation:
– Anti-inflammatory medications like steroids to reduce throat swelling
– Antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection causing epiglottitis
– Intravenous fluids to ensure hydration and nutrition until you can swallow again
In more serious cases, surgery might be needed. Two common options are cricothyroidotomy and tracheostomy. Tracheostomy is a minor procedure that makes a small incision between your tracheal rings. After that, a breathing tube is inserted into the windpipe to prevent respiratory failure. Cricothyroidotomy is the last resort.[9]
