Risk Factors
In addition to congenital causes, there are certain risk factors for having a deviated septum. Teenagers and adults usually have this health issue after a blow to their nose. However, most of them cannot remember when the injury occurred. A traffic accident, playground games, contact sports, or fighting are common risk factors. In addition, a deviated septum would become worse with age. The usual aging process tends to affect your nasal structures and leads to a more serious deviation over time. Irritation and swelling of the rhinosinusitis (sinus cavities) or rhinitis (nasal cavities) could cause more complications as well. These problems can further narrow your nasal passage and result in nasal obstruction. [10]
