Dermatomyositis – What Is It?

Associated Conditions with Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is associated with certain conditions. This means it can increase the risk or cause these health issues. The list includes:

– Cardiovascular disease: The condition would cause inflammation in the heart muscles. As a result, heart rhythm issues and congestive heart failure might occur.

– Connective tissue conditions: Sjogren’s syndrome, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

– Raynaud’s phenomenon: Your ears, nose, cheeks, toes, and fingers can turn pale if exposed to low temperatures or cold conditions.

– Lung disease: People with dermatomyositis might develop interstitial lung. This is a group of conditions leading to lung tissue scarring, making your lungs inelastic and stiff. Shortness of breath and dry cough can be possible signs.

– Cancer: Adults with dermatomyositis would be at a higher risk of developing cancer, especially ovarian cancer in females. The likelihood tends to reduce after 3 years after the diagnosis. [6]
