Crohn’s Disease – Causes, Diagnosis, Treatments

Biologic Therapies

Biologic therapies, also known as immunotherapy, is a treatment to stimulate the immune system either by suppressing or activating it. It is a recommended treatment for Crohn’s patients having moderate to severe symptoms and Crohn’s patients who do not respond well to traditional medication. Biologic therapies use biologic medicine made from proteins, genes, or antibodies to target enzymes or proteins that are associated with inflammation in Crohn’s disease.

Surgery

Medication and biological therapy are usually the first options to treat Crohn’s disease. However, surgeries might be necessary if certain treatments don’t respond well to patients. According to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (CCFA), three-quarters of patients with Crohn’s disease require surgery eventually. Types of Crohn’s surgery are various, and the primary goal is to alleviate symptoms while keeping as much bowel as possible. We will explain this part later in detail.
