Childhood Neglect or Abuse
Physical or sexual abuse and neglect during childhood may be a common cause of narcissism in many people. At a young age, they are very susceptible to negative comments and behaviors. Therefore, verbal or physical abuse from parents or friends may constrict their sense of self and increase their sense of shame, which subsequently increases the risk of the disorder. Not only narcissism, childhood maltreatment may also lead to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and paranoia. That’s why it is important to help children build strong relationships with family members, teachers, and friends to mitigate the damaging effects of abuse during childhood. [2]
