Causes of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Inheritance Pattern of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Spinal muscular atrophy is often passed down in an autosomal recessive way. This means that you can have the disease due to the inheritance of a changed SMN1 gene from both your mother and father. With 2 SMN1 gene copies, the body cannot produce SMN genes. As a result, the number of copies of the SMN2 gene will affect the severity of the case. Some cases could occur even when there are no inherited SMA genes. [4]
