Arthritis Treatments

Over-the-Counter Treatments

Many OTC treatments are available to help relieve pain caused by arthritis. These include:

– Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, such as naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin, may alleviate pain and inflammation. Avoid taking these medications in the long run.

– Acetaminophen may be effective in reducing inflammation. Do not take more than 4 grams of this drug a day to avoid toxicity and liver damage.

– Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation can be purchased over the counter or through a prescription to help with pain alleviation.

– Topical skin creams containing NSAIDs may provide relieving effects in people with arthritis. [5]
