Causes of Angular Cheilitis
While cold sores are caused by the virus, angular cheilitis is typically caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. Specifically, most cases are associated with Candida albicans. This fungus would start growing in areas where excess saliva builds up. This may be due to a loss of teeth, improperly fitted dentures or poor oral hygiene. Other possible causes of angular cheilitis include vitamin deficiencies, chapped or dry lips, or contact dermatitis. In some cases, a doctor cannot identify the cause. This is also known as idiopathic angular cheilitis. [7]
