Causes of Cold Sores
As said above, the main cause of cold sores is the herpes simplex virus. People may carry this virus for the rest of their life if they contract it. It is not uncommon for those with the virus to have cold sores on their face, particularly around the mouth. Nevertheless, not everyone with the virus will develop cold sores later. Illnesses or stress may increase the risk of more frequent outbreaks. Close contact, such as sexual intercourse, sharing food, kissing, or hugging, may spread the herpes virus. This may happen even when the sores are not visible yet. [6]
