ADHD – Types, Diagnosis, Treatments, and Outlook

ADHD Testing and Diagnosis

ADHD diagnosis should never solely rely on a single test because many other health problems may manifest similar symptoms and signs. If you suspect that your family member has ADHD, it is advisable to carefully observe their behaviors first and then ask a psychiatrist or psychologist for help.  If the patient has experienced particular symptoms for at least six months, his/her mental health professional will reach a preliminary diagnosis based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), an ADHD guideline published by the American Psychiatric Association. The evaluation criteria are listed as follows:

  • Children up to age 16 years old

Present 6+ inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms for half a year.

  • Adolescents/adults aged 17+

Present 5+ inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms for half a year. [1]
