5 ACL Injury Causes and Risk Factors
Sports Injuries
An ACL injury often occurs suddenly. It is very common in both non-contact and contact sports due to many reasons, especially football, soccer, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, downhill skiing, and volleyball. The exact causes include:
– Landing on one leg when jumping in basketball or volleyball
– Pivoting or cutting movements when you shift direction or land a food suddenly
– Hitting the knee directly, particularly when it is slightly bent inward or hyper-extended
– Twisting or bending the knee backward after an awkward jump or fall
– Repetitive pressure to the knee, which results in a loss of ligament’s elasticity
– Suddenly stopping or slowing from running, which make the ligament hyper-extend [6]
