Take Care of a Pet
If you are a pet lover, then you probably should take advantage of these relationships to help lower your cortisol levels. Studies have shown that having a pet can reduce distress, which, in turns, lead improved cortisol levels.
Other studies suggest that having a better relationship with a dog prove beneficial than from your friend’s support in cases of social stress. Further, a study testing the cortisol-reducing effect of canine relationship in non-pet-owners compared to pet owners showed that non-pet owner had an incredible decline in the cortisol level when given a canine companion compared to pet owners. This reason may be because pet owners already have a relationship with their pets before the study took place.
More so, pets seem to also benefit from the positive interaction with humans, and, as such, it is opined that pet companionship is a mutual benefit. [8]
