Common Hematology Tests
Hematologists usually take the following tests to help monitor or diagnose blood conditions:
– Complete blood count
A complete blood count measures the number of white and red blood cells, platelets, hematocrit, and hemoglobin.
– Partial thromboplastin time
This test measures the amount of time that blood clots. Your doctor could suggest this procedure when you have bleeding issues, such as pink urine, heavy periods, or nosebleeds.
– Prothrombin time
This test also measures how long for blood to clot. It keeps track of prothrombin, a protein produced by the liver to aid in blood clotting. This procedure is often used when you have a liver issue or are taking a blood thinner.
– Bone marrow biopsy
During this procedure, a small needle is used to take a bone marrow sample for lab tests. This can help find out whether the body is producing enough blood cells or not.
