Turmeric
It is really exciting knowing that some of the things we put on our spice list do more than just spicing our foods. Turmeric is one of those spices which is also medicinal. Turmeric contains a property called curcumin which is used to treat respiratory infections and pulmonary diseases. Turmeric is naturally anti-inflammatory. It helps to combat respiratory infection and develops immunity against it. Curcumin present in turmeric also has an anti-viral effect on the cold and flu which are symptoms of COPD. This anti-viral agent assists in the management of the symptoms and also reduces their severity. Just like ginseng, turmeric can also be processed into powder and added to food, or taken as tea; believe me, it is tasteless! However, this herb should be taken in little doses and shouldn’t be taken on an empty stomach. Note that not all persons can consume turmeric. A COPD patients suffering from bleeding disorders, gall bladder obstruction and those who are to undergo surgery should not consume this herb. Also, a COPD patient who is pregnant and lactating should avoid turmeric. [7]
