Typical Symptoms of Epilepsy to Know
As epilepsy occurs as a result of abnormal brain activities, a seizure would affect many brain functions. Typical signs include a staring spell, temporary confusion, loss of awareness or consciousness, uncontrollable leg or arm movements, muscle stiffness, and some psychological symptoms like déjà vu, anxiety, or fear. Symptoms can vary a lot, depending on the form of seizure. In most cases, you tend to experience the same form of seizure each time. This means the symptoms may be similar. [5]
Causes of Epilepsy
In more than 50 percent of epilepsy cases, the exact cause is not fully understood. Some possible triggers include a brain cyst or tumor, lack of oxygen in the brain, vascular diseases, stroke, high fever, serious illness, brain scarring, brain trauma, infectious illnesses, lack of oxygen at birth, brain malformation, prenatal injury, maternal drug abuse, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and some neurological, developmental, or genetic disorders. Certain genetic factors would make people more predisposed to seizures caused by environmental triggers. [6]
