Do you have an autoimmune disease?
Theoretically, patients with autoimmune disorders are not good candidates for laser eye surgery because they have heightened risks for infection, dry eyes, and other adverse effects.
These autoimmune diseases include but are not limited to:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Lupus
- Psoriasis
- Crohn’s disease
- Celiac disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Addison’s disease
However, it is not always this way. Depending on the type of autoimmune disease and the part of the body it affects, undergoing laser eye surgery is still possible in some cases. A good example is rheumatoid arthritis which affects joints only. People with this condition have a marginally higher chance of developing complications than those with healthy immune systems. [7]
