Fibroadenoma Removal Surgery and Recovery

General Procedures and Types of Fibroadenoma Removal Surgery

There are typically two main steps in fibroadenoma removal surgery:

– Cut out: The whole fibroadenoma will be removed with a knife. This step is also known as surgical excision

– Freeze: A thin device is inserted into the fibroadenoma through the breast skin. It may turn cold and make the tissue freeze to damage the fibroadenoma. This procedure is not available in every medical facility. [3]

Lumpectomy

Also known as an excision biopsy, a lumpectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a fibroadenoma by making a small cut in the breast. It can be done under a general or local anesthetic. The whole procedure may last around 1 hour. Once the tumor has been removed, the cut will be sealed with stitches. This may leave scars on your breast, which would affect imaging tests in the future. You may go home right after a lumpectomy and do not need to stay overnight in the hospital. Before the surgery, your doctor needs to evaluate your overall health to detect any potential risks. In addition, you should stop taking some blood-thinning supplements and medications. [4]
