Types of Benzodiazepines
There are three types of benzodiazepines, which are different in the length of their effects on the body and brain. These include:
– Short-acting benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam, temazepam, and oxazepam, have short half-life. It means they can be processed and removed from the body quickly. Short-acting medications are often prescribed for treating insomnia and sleeping issues. Taking this type of benzodiazepines may lead to a higher risk of dependence than other forms.
– Intermediate benzodiazepines, such as estazolam and lorazepam.
– Long-acting benzodiazepines have the longest half-life. Taking this type may lead to a hangover, but the risk of withdrawal symptoms is lower. Long-acting medications are often prescribed for treating anxiety. [2]
