What is a Maculopapular Rash?

Possible Causes of a Maculopapular Rash

Infections

Some viral and bacterial infections can be the cause of maculopapular rashes. These include hepatitis C, hepatitis B, Ebola virus, Zika virus, scarlet fever, measles, HIV, herpes, and other diseases associated with your mouth, foot, and hand.

Allergies

Allergic responses happen when the body mistakenly attacks an allergen after identifying it as a threat. This might lead to a maculopapular rash. Other typical signs include hives, dizziness, difficulty breathing, swelling, stomach pain, or increased heart rate.

Medication Reaction

Some people might develop a maculopapular rash a few days after taking OTC or prescribed medications. These include thiazide diuretics, sulphonamides, NSAIDs, hypoglycemic medications, beta-lactam antibiotics, anticonvulsants, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and allopurinol. This can be a side effect or allergic response of the body.

Systemic Inflammation

Systemic inflammation in the body can be a possible cause of maculopapular rashes. This is actually how the body responds to an infection or injury. [4]
