Spinal Muscular Atrophy Symptoms

Type 1

This is the most prevalent form of spinal muscular atrophy. It typically starts during the first few months of babies. Due to reduced muscle tone, children cannot hold up the head without support. Respiratory weakness can also occur and lead to the development of bell-shaped chests. Kids with type 1 often have difficulty eating. If left untreated, they cannot learn how to sit, walk, or stand properly. It is important for parents to notice these symptoms and seek medical attention to improve the outlook. When your baby does not move as expected or has a decline in motor control, consult the pediatrician immediately as these are clear signs of neuromuscular conditions. [5]
