Symptoms Based on Subgroups of Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Type 0
Type 0 spinal muscular atrophy is the most serious form. It would affect the movement even when the baby is still in utero. Newborn infants with the condition would experience hypotonic muscles and be unable to move, which subsequently causes joint deformities. These babies basically cannot suck and eat. Therefore, malnutrition is common in children with type 0 spinal muscular atrophy. Severe respiratory weakness can also occur, so mechanical support might be needed for breathing. Life expectancy is often short, typically does not exceed infancy. [4]
