Multiple Myeloma – Diagnosis and Treatment

Stem-Cell Transplantation

Stem-cell transplantation or ASCT is a very effective treatment option for multiple myeloma. It would improve or even cure the disease. During this procedure, the stem cells will be removed from the peripheral blood or bone marrow for the transplant. After that, high-dose chemotherapy will be injected to kill cancerous cells before stored stem cells are put back to the body. Keep in mind that this is still a very new treatment with many risks. Therefore, not everyone is suitable for it. In general, it is not recommended to undergo stem-cell transplantation for those people with:

– More than 75 years old

– Damaged liver or kidney functions

– Major heart disease or problems [8]
