Tender Points of Fibromyalgia
A typical sign of fibromyalgia is pain when pressure is applied to certain body parts. Before the current diagnostic criteria were developed, healthcare providers used an old system of tender points to diagnose this condition. Under this system, a diagnosis was made when you experience tenderness and widespread pain under applied pressure to at least 11 out of 18 points on the body. However, the symptoms may come and go, making it difficult to list these areas correctly over a period. Also, this procedure ignores other important characteristics of fibromyalgia, especially depression and fatigue. That’s why more doctors are now adopting the new techniques for diagnosis.
