Treatment Options for Gonorrhea
Antibiotics
Similar to other infections, the first-line treatment for gonorrhea is the use of antibiotics. However, the increasing rates of infection over the last decades have made the bacteria more resistant to nearly all major antibiotics. As a result, there are only a few options left to deal with this condition. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention only recommends two drugs, including azithromycin and ceftriaxone. They can be used as a first-line therapy or in combination. The main goal of treatment is to deal with the infection quickly and aggressively so that the bacteria would be eliminated fully in a single dose and do not have any chance to mutate.[6]
