Gallstone: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Diet

Trouble Emptying the Gallbladder

The liver releases bile into the gallbladder and the gallbladder stores this bile until it is needed for the digestion of fats. After meals, the gallbladder is emptied, and the bile is released into the first section of the small intestine where it helps in the breaking down and absorption of fats. However, the problem arises if the gallbladder fails to empty the bile perhaps because of an obstruction to the biliary ducts, or does not empty it often enough. When this happens, bile may become very concentrated in the gallbladder and cause the formation of gallstones.
