Blood Vessel and Cell Abnormalities
A certain condition associated with blood vessels and cells may increase the risk of blue fingernails as well. These include:
– Carbon monoxide poisoning: This condition may inhibit the capabilities of hemoglobin in the blood, which plays an important role in binding oxygen.
– Methemoglobinemia: People with this disorder may have increased methemoglobin levels, which cannot release oxygen like other types of hemoglobin. It may occur at birth or due to exposure to medications (local anesthetics and antibiotics) or chemicals.
– Raynaud’s phenomenon: This disorder causes a reduction in blood flow to the feet and hands because of spasms in the blood vessels.
– Polycythemia vera: This is a type of blood cancer that leads to the overproduction of blood cells in the bone marrow. [7]
