Antibiotics
Many people with emphysema also experience bacterial infections such as pneumonia and acute bronchitis. In these cases, your doctor might prescribe some antibiotics to fight against these bacteria. Moderate or mild cases of emphysema-related infections can be treated with some broad-spectrum drugs such as amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, as well as doxycycline. For more severe cases, some common options include aminoglycosides, third-generation cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and penicillin. [8]
