What Is a Mastectomy?
A mastectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all tissue of a breast. It can be done to prevent or treat breast cancer. In the early stages, this surgery can be an effective treatment option, along with lumpectomy or breast-conserving surgery. Choosing between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy can be hard for many doctors. Both options are equally effective in preventing breast cancer from recurring. A mastectomy may be done when people with breast cancer cannot go through a lumpectomy. Newer techniques allow the a more natural look of the breast after the surgery. [1]
