When emphysema progresses, some parts of the lungs would be damaged beyond treatment. This makes it more difficult to breathe and might restrict your lung capacity as well. In these cases, surgery is needed to reduce lung volume. During this process, your doctor will carefully remove damaged parts in small wedges. This ensures that the remaining tissues can expand and allow for easy and efficient breathing. Keep in mind that surgery can only extend your lifespan rather than treat symptoms.
