The Role of Blood Clots in Aneurysm and Embolism and the Common Risk Factors
In many types of embolism and aneurysm, blood clots tend to be the main cause. An embolism is a direct result of a group of clots called thrombi that separates from the wall of blood vessels and travels around the body. Similarly, an aneurysm may be caused by a thrombus, or plaque, that develops in a blood vessel. This causes the vessel to become weaker and results in rupture over time. [4]
Both embolisms and aneurysms are caused by an interruption in the blood flow. Although the cause is not the same, most risk factors are similar. Common factors that make people more susceptible to both embolism and aneurysm include smoking, high cholesterol level, high blood pressure, pregnancy, obesity, as well as a history of stroke or heart problems. Keep in mind that having any of these factors does not necessary mean that you will develop an aneurysm or embolism. [5]
