Croup – Diagnosis and Treatment

Hydration

Keep the body staying hydrated can help loosen mucus built up in the throat, thus reducing a barking cough or heavy breathing caused by croup. Children tend to avoid drinking fluids because their throat can be swollen and inflamed. Try to encourage them to consume at least 2 liters of water per day. The best options are clear and warm fluids, such as broth and tea. For infants, water and both formula or breast milk are suitable. In some severe cases when people with croup are dehydrated, they might get IV fluids in the hospital.[4]
